No Laughing Matter: Identity Theft

Historically, I've written many articles about personal identity theft for your consumption and protection. But I have yet to summarize what you can do proactively. So please consider the following.

It is not known where perp actors obtain personal information to commit acts of malfeasance, but what is known from a human capital perspective is: 1) there are rules and regulations which encapsulate the duration an entity is allowed to possess personal identifiers and 2) there are known methods of personal information destruction.

Recommended, thus, and in a phenomenological context is proper disposal of personal information such as shredding the data. If you have experienced data theft, it is known you should contact the FTC and local authorities.

Worth considering, in addition, and much akin to exercises in sourcing, is always the nearest proximity rule. Establish etiology 1) how could access to personal information be obtained (who had access) and 2) what are the motivations of the AI model and 3) how does etiology of DPT traits influence the antecedent behavior -- as with ABCs and comorbidity (Erickson Foundation, 2024; Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024).

Data triangulation appears to be a most useful method deductively, but it could also be wise to inductively let knowledge of outcomes influence activities (Gestalt Foundation, 2024). Thus, as a useful tip keep these AI facts in mind:

  • AI-enabled scams will become more advanced through galvanaz, and use of AI models to mimic trusted sources convincingly;
  • These scams could include emails and messages that appear legitimate but are designed to phish for personal details;
  • Nation/State threat actors will drive new levels of identity crimes, especially impersonation and synthetic identity fraud; and
  • Adoption of biometric-based identity verification tools will increase to prove people are who they claim to be.

Onward & Good luck
